LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego track and field team will serve as host of the 2013 Leon T. Roach III Vault-a-Thon this Saturday, Feb. 2, at Triton Track & Field Stadium. Both the women's and the men's pole vault events will commence at 10 a.m.
In its fourth year of existence, the Leon T. Roach III Vault-a-Thon is held to honor the memory of the former UCSD student-athlete who passed away in 2009. All funds raised will be directed toward financing the Triton Track and Field Memorial Scoreboard Project.
In addition to the pole vault competition, this year's event will again include a bake sale and commemorative t-shirts available for purchase.
"We expect another great turnout from the pole vault community for the Vault-a-Thon," said UCSD men's head coach Tony Salerno. "This has really become a 'can't-miss' event for many. The opportunity to honor Leon and support the Roach Family with this meet has made it a tradition for our program. We expect to raise another $4,000-$6,000 from the Vault-a-Thon to top off fundraising for the new videoboard."
Featuring an entirely-renovated pole vault area at the stadium that showcases spectator terraces at the facility's south end, the Leon T. Roach III Memorial was dedicated in 2011 in his name by his family during a heartfelt ceremony in the meet's second running.
This year's meet will accept entries on the day of the competition for a fee of only $20. For more information regarding the Leon T. Roach III Vault-a-Thon, or to make a donation, click here.
The Blue-Gold-Alumni meet on Saturday, Feb. 9, will feature the dedication ceremony for the new videoboard. The meet will start at 11:30 a.m. and will be followed by the dedication ceremony at the end of the meet, which is slated for 2:40 p.m.
