WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -
Fourth-year UC San Diego seniors Jessica Miklaski
and Zach Nagengast
were named Tuesday as the 2013 season's first California Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Athletes of the Week, for the week of Feb. 18-24.
Miklaski and Nagengast were two of five individual event winners for the Tritons at the 17th Annual Rossi Relays in Claremont last Saturday, Feb. 23.
Miklaski, a San Diego native out of Westview High School, won the javelin with a career-best mark of 143'4". The distance, already a provisional qualifier for nationals in the first meet that qualifying scores could be attained, bettered that which earned her All-America distinction at the 2011 NCAA Division II Championships (143'2"), and keeps her in fourth all-time in program history. Miklaski had previously won the javelin at the season-opening UCSD/CPP/CMS Triangular in La Jolla on Feb. 16.
Nagengast took top honors in the discus (161'5") while placing third in the hammer throw (181'8"). Both marks were provisional NCAA qualifiers and season bests. His hammer distance was a lifetime personal best (previously 173'7"). He ranks sixth and seventh, respectively, in those events all-time at UCSD. Nagengast had won both the discus (153'10") and hammer throw (167'10") while finishing second in the shot put (49'4.25") at the UCSD/CPP/CMS Triangular.
The UCSD men's and women's track and field squads are in Irvine this Saturday, Mar. 2, to compete in the All-UC Meet, hosted by UC Irvine, starting at 10 a.m. The full schedule can be found here.
