SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC San Diego track and field teams divided and excelled at the 35th Annual Aztec Invitational and the Occidental Distance Carnival on Friday, closing the day with several top-20 finishes in their competitive events.

Seniors A.B. Shaheen and Zach Nagengast highlighted Friday's slate of events at the San Diego State-hosted meet with their respective second and third-place showings in the men's hammer throw invitational event, held at UCSD's Triton Track & Field Stadium. Shaheen threw the hammer a career-best distance of 186'6" to strength his hold of fifth on UCSD's all-time top 10 list for that event, while Nagengast had a personal-best throw of 185'0" to give him a share of sixth on that list. Junior Matt Endler (153'1", 15th) and freshman Giovanni Rico (119'4", 24th) also finished decently in the event.

UCSD's men in the 1500-meter run invitational event all crossed the finish line at the SDSU Sports Deck among the top 20 overall. Senior Anthony Heredia led the trio of Tritons in ninth place with a time of 4:00.52. With a time of 14:37.98, sophomore Tanner Collins finished 10th overall in the men's 5000, giving him the highest finish for a UCSD student-athlete at this year's running of the meet. Collins was followed by junior Kellen Levy (14:56.06, 24th) and freshman Tareq Alwafai (14:56.30, 25th).
