Tritons Earn High Marks in Final Day of Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC San Diego track and field teams concluded their second and final day of the 35th Annual Aztec Invitational on Saturday and came home with another slate of quality performances.

Junior Lorato Anderson earned an NCAA provisional qualifier upon crossing the finish line of the women's 800-meter run in 2:14.28 to place 14th overall.

Sophomore Chantia Justice, who had the Tritons' highest finish of the day, led a group of strong showings for UCSD in the women's triple jump with her second-place finish. Justice leaped a distance of 38'11.75", while three other UCSD women finished in the top 10, including freshman Kristin Sato in fifth (38'3.25"), freshman Julia Wildenthaler in eighth (36'5.5") and junior Marya Carter in 10th (36'2").

Freshmen Michelle Cummins (33'8.75"), Meredith Bell (32'), Kristen Daugherty (31'10.75") and Devon Brook (31'0.5") occupied slots 13th through 16th place, respectively, in the triple jump.

Wildenthaler additionally headed a trio of Tritons in the high jump, where she cleared a height of 5'3" for an 11th-place finish. Junior Michelle Woodruff (5'3", 14th) and Brook (5'1", 24th) rounded out the trio.

In the women's pole vault, freshmen Sydney Blakeley and Megan Benham finished within the top 20. Blakeley cleared a height of 12' to secure a 15th-place showing, while Benham recorded a personal best of 11'8" to finish in a tie for 17th.

Taking 25th overall in the women's javelin, junior Aletha Vassilakis threw the spear a length of 107'11".

Back on the track, junior Lauren Irish (1:05.88) took 21st and senior Raquel Ormsby (1:06.23) finished 23rd in the women's 400 hurdles. In addition, senior Kathleen Hitchens ran to a time of 12.82 for a 25th-place result in the 100.

The men had two top-10 performances on the day. One came from sophomore Nash Howe, who finished fourth in the javelin after launching the spear a distance of 202'5".

The other top-10 finish came from sophomore Keith Rose, who sprinted to sixth place in the 100 with a time of 11.07.

Senior Ryan Eckert notched a 13th-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 48'10.25". Finishing six slots behind Eckert for 19th overall was senior Matt Endler, who threw a distance of 44'9.75". Senior Zach Nagengast, who threw 155'10" in the discus, ended in a tie for 17th place in that event, while Endler took 27th with a throw of 150'0".

Junior Benjamin Berthet tied for 13th overall in the pole vault, where he successfully rose over a height of 15'3.75".

In the men's 400, three Tritons finished within the top 20, including sophomore Nathaniel Ford (50.20, 16th), freshman Sho Kodera (50.66, 18th) and sophomore Connor Mamikunian (50.73, 19th).

UCSD also had back-to-back finishes in the men's 400 hurdles from senior Keenan Smith (57.32, 22nd) and sophomore Jeffrey Lim (57.62, 23rd).

Due to final exams, the Tritons will have less than half of the team in competition for the Ross and Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet at Point Loma Nazarene, beginning on Saturday at 9 a.m.
