WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sophomore Sabrina Pimentel of the UC San Diego track and field team was named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for the week of April 22-28. The announcement was made by the league on Monday.
The Westminster native was one of two first-place finishers for the Tritons during the Triton Invitational on April 27, winning the women’s 800 in 2:11.51. Pimentel also ran the opening leg of the UCSD women’s 4x400 relay team, which came in second place with a time of 3:51.15.
Pimentel becomes the fourth Triton this season bestowed with the award and the second on the women’s team after senior Jessica Miklaski, who earned the award after throwing a personal best of 143'4" in the javelin to win the event at the 17th Annual Rossi Relays on Feb. 23 while clinching an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier mark. During the same week, senior Zach Nagengast earned the honor for the men with his then-personal bests of 161’5” in the discus and 181’8” in the hammer throw to take first and third, respectively, at the 17th Annual Rossi Relays. Sophomore Nash Howe picked up his award upon winning the javelin with a personal-record throw of 212’4” at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on March 9.
As Nagengast has for the men, Pimentel is the only Triton on the women’s side to have two provisional marks this season. Pimentel, who qualified provisionally in the 400 and 800, has season and personal bests in both events. Her fastest 400, the third-best in Triton history, occurred on April 20 at the Soka Peace Invitational in Aliso Viejo, where she ran a career-best time of 55.95 to finish first. Pimentel earlier notched a provisional mark in the 800 during the All-UC Meet in Irvine on March 2, sprinting to a time of 2:13.05 and a second-place showing. She eclipsed that time in Claremont at the 27th Annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 13 with a time of 2:10.90, the second-fastest 800 in UCSD history for that event.
While Pimentel has a share of the 27th-quickest 400 in Division II this season, Pimentel is even better in the 800, ranking 12th nationally in that event.
The UCSD track and field squads will travel to the CCAA Track & Field Championships in Turlock, which begins Thursday with the 100 of the decathlon at 10 a.m. The meet, which runs through Saturday, will be hosted on Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium.
