INDIANAPOLIS - UC San Diego track and field freshman Kristin Sato’s season will live to see another day as the Valley Christian High School alumna was added to the list of competitors in the triple jump at the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday.
The Milpitas native led the Tritons this season in the triple jump, turning in a season-best leap of 39’6” at the Cal-Nevada Championships on March 30 to finish in fourth place. The measurement was good enough for a share of the 22nd-best mark in Division II this season and ranks third on UCSD’s all-time top-10 list for that event.
Sato later jumped 39'5.25" to win her first league title at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships in Turlock on May 4, earning CCAA Female Freshman of the Year accolades at the conclusion of the three-day meet.
With the announcement of her addition, Sato will join senior Jessica Miklaski and sophomore Sabrina Pimentel, who will be competing in the javelin throw and 800, respectively, on the women’s side. Rounding out the combined seven Tritons contending at the NCAA Championships for the men are sophomore Nash Howe (javelin), fifth-year senior Kiley Libuit (javelin), junior Clint Rosser (pole vault) and senior A.B. Shaheen (hammer).
Sato will hit the runway of the triple jump during the second day of events at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo., on Friday, May 24, at 4:15 p.m. PDT.
