SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego men’s track and field athlete Nash Howe and women’s water polo player Sarah Lizotte have been named San Diego Hall of Champions Breitbard Stars of the Month for May.
Howe threw a personal-record 221’4” to win his first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title in the javelin in Turlock on May 4. The sophomore then produced a best effort of 214’11” on his fifth of six tries in his NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships debut in Pueblo, Colo., on May 25, good enough for a seventh-place showing and first-time All-America status.
Howe’s toss of 221’4” at the CCAA Championships made him the only Triton track and field student-athlete, male or female, to achieve an automatic NCAA qualifying mark this past season. He was ultimately joined by three UCSD men and three UCSD women in Colorado, but put together the lone All-America performance. The distance ranks No. 2 all-time in program history, behind only older brother and 2012 graduate Nick Howe at 231’3”.
Lizotte led No. 12 UCSD to a best-ever sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championship in Boston, May 10-12. She tallied a team-high nine goals over three contests to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Second Team. A game-high five of those goals came in a 15-8 victory over Pomona-Pitzer on the second day. The junior added three more scores in a 12-10 overtime loss to No. 10 Princeton in the fifth-place game. The last of them broke her own school record for single-season goals with 92. At 229 career goals with a full senior season remaining, she is just 17 away from eclipsing former U.S. Olympian Julie Swail's all-time Triton mark.
This is the second straight Star of the Month distinction for Lizotte, the 2013 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Player of the Year. She was also chosen for April after guiding the Tritons to the WWPA title to cap an 11-1 month.
Howe, Lizotte (twice), baseball pitcher Ryan Goodbrand and national champion swimmers Anji Shakya and Dane Stassi now make six San Diego Hall of Champions honorees for UCSD in 2013.
Howe and Lizotte were among seven recipients for May at the amateur level. A total of 15 professional, amateur and high school athletes were recognized.
