No. 12 Tritons Defeated by No. 1 UCLA
Release: Friday 10/04/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 12 UC San Diego fell victim to No. 1 UCLA, 17-2, Friday night at Canyonview. The Bruins lived up to their number one national ranking and have now won 15 straight contests since starting their 2013 campaign.

Following the loss, the Tritons sit at 7-8 on the year.

“UCLA is a very good water polo team,” said UCSD head coach Denny Harper. “In my opinion, it’s one of the better Bruin teams I’ve seen in recent memory. They're very talented and very well coached. They're on a mission.”

UCLA came out of the gate firing and didn’t stop until the final whistle blew. The Bruins scored 17 straight goals on the offensive end and matched the production on the defensive end, frustrating the Tritons all night long.

“In the first period we had some opportunities to maybe get on the board quickly,” said Harper. “It could have made all the difference in the world.”

UCSD had multiple chances in the game to find the back of the net, but each shot rattled of the post or crossbar to never allow the Tritons an opportunity for comeback.

The Bruins held leads of 11-0 at halftime and 16-0 after three periods. The Tritons managed to outscore UCLA in the final period, however, making the final 17-2.

Chase Cockerill capitalized on a man advantage to put UCSD on the scoreboard with a goal before Jeffrey Jarvis found the back of the cage from the outside to finish off the scoring for the Tritons.

Cameron Ravanbach had nine saves in the loss.

Aimone Barabino led the Bruin attack with four scores, while James Harshorne blocked nine shots on the night for UCLA.

“I know the guys were disappointed, but it’s important that we recover from this,” said Harper.

Friday's game was played at Canyonview’s East Pool to honor its 30th anniversary. A crowd of 1,009 fans, students and alumni gathered to honor the milestone.

The Tritons will play five games over the course of three days next week, starting with a WWPA matchup with California Baptist on Friday, Oct. 11. The game in Riverside is slated to begin at 3 p.m. UCSD will then travel to Irvine to compete at the SoCal Tournament on Oct. 12-13. The Tritons will face No. 4 Cal for the second time in 2013 on Saturday at 10:50 a.m.
