UCSD Advances All Three Boats to Grand Finals at WIRA Championships

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's rowing team recorded a strong day of racing on Lake Natoma Saturday, advancing all three of its boats to Grand Finals at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships.

UCSD, ranked fifth nationally, qualified its Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Novice 8 crews for Sunday's Grand Finals.

"It was a great team performance today," said UCSD head coach Colin Truex. "Getting every boat into Grand Finals is something we can all be proud of and we'll be going for some hardware tomorrow."

In Saturday's Division II/Division III/Club Varsity 8 heats, UC San Diego finished second with a time of 7:12.70, exactly 12 seconds behind winner Humboldt State, currently ranked fourth in the country. The Tritons edged out UC Davis, which crossed the finish line in 7:13.00 for third place. UC Santa Barbara was fourth (7:18.90) and Pacific Lutheran placed fifth (7:23.60).

Heat one was won handily by second-ranked Western Washington, which posted a time of 7:01.40, seven seconds in front of Puget Sound.

The top three finishers from each heat qualified for Sunday's Grand Final, which will take place at 11:50 a.m. In the field with UCSD will be Western Washington, Humboldt State, Puget Sound, Lewis & Clark and UC Davis.

The Tritons' Varsity 4 boat also finished second in the second of two heats Saturday, posting a time of 8:05.30. Humboldt State won that heat as well, recording a flat 8:00.00. Seattle Pacific took third (8:08.10), Portland State was fourth (8:15.80), Oregon finished fifth (8:18.10), Chico State was sixth (8:22.70) and Willamette was seventh (8:25.90).

Western Washington took heat one by over 14 seconds with a time of 7:50.00. Long Beach State was a distant second in 8:04.10.

Sunday's Division II/Division III/Club Varsity 4 Grand Final is set for an 8 a.m. start. UCSD, Western Washington, Humboldt State, Long Beach State, Orange Coast College and Seattle Pacific make up the field.

In the first heat of the Novice 8, the Tritons had a time of 7:38.70 to place third. Gonzaga had a winning time of 7:08.90 and Oregon was second in 7:36.70. Portland came in fourth (7:39.70) and UC Davis rounded out the heat in fifth (7:55.50).

The second heat was won by Seattle in 7:17.00.

Sunday's Grand Final field is set with UCSD, Gonzaga, Seattle, Oregon, UC Santa Barbara and Sacramento State. The race goes off at 10:10 a.m.

UCSD's 2nd Varsity 8 will also take place in a seven-boat Grand Final Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Alongside the Tritons will be Puget Sound, Lewis & Clark, UC Santa Barbara, Humboldt State, UC Davis and Mills. There were no heat races and all seven crews advanced directly to the Grand Final.
