The Tritons and Toreros competed in both the Collegiate Eight and Collegiate Novice Eight events, with UCSD more than holding its own against its Division I neighbors. UCSD's top boat posted the top time in the novice eight race, while the Triton varsity eight finished second behind the top varsity boat from USD.
Racing in a time trial format, the novice eight turned in a strong performance, catching the USD crew, then losing ground on the turn when the Toreros cut on the inside. The battle would last through five turns and in the end, USD came in just in front of UCSD, inching out to an eight second lead in elapsed time.
Despite their finish, the Tritons still came away with the victory as the lead Torero crew was assessed a one minute penalty for cutting inside the course buoys. UCSD finished the race with a winning 68-second margin.
The USD and UCSD B crews were also given penalties, as the Toreros cut buoys and the Tritons failed to give way to an overtaking crew in the following race.
In the varsity race, USD took the lead-off position and never looked back, finishing nearly a minute in front of the UCSD. The Tritons held off the Toreros' B and C boats, which finished third and fourth.
"USD sets the bar in our conference, so we are pretty pleased that after finishing behind their three varsity boats in the last two regattas, we were able to catch two and we're closing in on their top boat," head coach Pattie Pinkerton said. "We have work to do, but we are looking forward to the spring season."
UCSD's second varsity eight was entered in the Open Eight event, where they took line honors, but finished fifth overall.
The Tritons will resume training in January, with their next competition scheduled for early March when the open the spring season in Newport Beach.
