STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 11 UC San Diego men's water polo team split its first pair of games at the Norcal Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Tritons came back to defeat Air Force, 8-7, in double overtime after dropping their tournament opener to No. 6 UC Irvine, 11-8.
The Tritons jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. UCI flippped the switch and came out with four unanswered goals in the second to take a one goal lead into halftime.
UCSD managed to tie it up as they went into the final eight minutes of regulation. UC Irvine scored inicially to take the lead early on in the quarter. Josh Stiling would add his second of the game to bring the Tritons within one. Tommy Friedrich's lone goal of the match with just one recond left in regulation tied the game and sent it to extra minutes.
After netting one in the first three minutes of extra time, UCI took control of the final period of overtime, netting two goals to take the match 11-8.
Triton goalie Cameron Ravanbach finished the game with five saves.
UCI GOALS: Bojan Hrlec 2, Winston Newland 2, Nick Pfeil 2, Mitch Wise 2, Jacob Mourer, Brian Pickford, Alan Robertson.
Saves: Cameron Ravanbach (UCSD) 5; Alex Kazmier (UCI) 6.
The Tritons again found themselves playing well early on, outscoring Air Force 2-0 in the opening quarter.
Stiling, the lead scorer for UCSD for the third consecutive game, finished the match with three goals.
The two teams matched each other for goals in both the second and fourth quarter. Air Force's solid third quarter kept it in the game. The Tritons again found themselves playing extra minutes to get the win.
Neither team scored in the first two extra quarters, so the match went to sudden death- golden goal. It was senior Brian Roach with his deput goal as a Triton that would end the game, and give UCSD their first victory of the season.
Ravanbach had a big game in the cage, turning away 15 shots.
