Five Tritons Advance to Singles Round of 16 at USTA/ITA Regionals

LOS ANGELES - The 2012-13 season started in style for the UC San Diego men's tennis team during day one of the 2012 USTA/Intercollegiate Tournament Association (ITA) Regional Championships at Cal State L.A.

Five Tritons advanced to Friday's round of 16 in singles play, while two doubles squads will compete in the round of eight.

Horea Porutiu defeated Jacob Spizman of Grand Canyon, 7-6, 6-3, to begin Thursday. Later in the day, Porutiu faced Point Loma Nazarene's Eric De Board and dominated his Sea Lion opponent, 6-0, 6-0.

Max Jiganti also advanced to the round of 16. After receiving a first-round bye, Jiganti beat Jimmy Manning of Sonoma State, 6-1, 6-3.

Ganesh Alagappan and Guy Giubilato will all see action in Friday's round of 16. Alagappan advanced out of the round of 64 after defeating Point Loma Nazarene's Brooks Baldinger in come-from-behind fashion, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.

In doubles play, the teams of Jiganti and Luu and Alagappan and Porutiu advanced to play in Friday's round of eight. Following a bye in the round of 32, Jiganti and Luu topped Ahmad Saleem and Arjun Bal of Grand Canyon by default. Alagappan and Porutiu, who also had a bye in the opening round, took down Felix Schueller and Alex Roggenkamp of Grand Canyon, 8-1.

The three-day tournament features the top NCAA Division II men's and women's tennis players in the West Region. Cal State L.A. is hosting the West event for a third straight year. In all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from more than 600 schools will be competing in eight USTA/ITA Regional Championships across the country.

The singles and doubles champions from this week's regional will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, which will be held at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama on Oct. 11-14. The national championship event will include all eight regional champions from the NCAA Division II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges levels.

The singles and doubles champions at each level will then compete to become the overall "Super Bowl" champions. The "Super Bowl" champions will earn wild cards into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with the opportunity to win the culminating event held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
