In the afternoon hours at Cal State L.A., the Triton twosome of Melissa Breisacher and Tara Vanooteghem took on the Grand Canyon pairing of Priscilla Annoual and Justine Majan in the Round of 16. Unfortunately, the Tritons were overpowered by the Lopes and were defeated, 8-6.
On a nearby court, two different teams from the same two schools played each other and ended with a similar result. This time, it was UCSD's team of Melinda Chu and Maiko Hermsmeier which suffered an 8-3 defeat from Katharina Mittag and Frederique Van de Velde of GCU, the No. 3-seeded team in women's doubles.
Though both UCSD teams were eliminated on Friday, the women's doubles regional championship match will be played on Saturday after the conclusion of the semifinals matches, which begin earlier in the day at 2:30 p.m.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships features some of the best men's and women's student-athletes facing off in every ITA region throughout the country. In the 88 USTA/ITA Regional Championships which are put on nationwide, more than 8,000 student-athletes in NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, as well as junior and community colleges will compete.
The champions of each regional site move on to the ITA National Small College Championships, which will host the eight region champions from NCAA Division II and III in addition to NAIA and junior/community colleges.
