Tritons Blank Stanislaus for Fifth Straight Win
Release: Saturday 09/29/2012

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Freshman Danielle Dahle produced a match-high 14 kills to help lead the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a straight set win over league opponent Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.

Scores were 25-22, 25-10 and 25-21. It was the fifth straight win for UCSD, which improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUS fell to 4-10 and 1-5.

For the second consecutive night, the Tritons delivered a potent attack and had a strong presence at the net. They totaled 44 kills and 13 errors in 113 attacks, good for a .274 hitting percentage, and out-blocked the Warriors, 8-4.

Dahle swung at .364 with only two errors in 33 attempts. She also finished with nine digs and led all players with 14.5 points.

Three Tritons had three blocks apiece, including Lauren Demos, Sara McCutchan and Sheridan Taylor.

UCSD owned a large advantage in digs, totaling 65 to Stanislaus' 51. A majority of those scoops came from Sophie Rowe and Katy Woodward, who each had 21 on the night, both setting career-highs. Playing in just her second match since Aug. 31, Rowe added nine kills, two aces and a block, recording 11.5 total points.

Pacing the offense were setters Amber Hawthorne and Heidi Sierks, who tallied 23 and 10 assists, respectively.

Cal State Stanislaus was held to a .111 (34-20-126) attack percentage. Andrea Fett led the Warriors with 12 kills while Ashley Pittman had 18 digs.

The Warriors led for most of the opening set. A kill by Fett put them up 4-3 and they stayed ahead, by as many as five points, until UCSD mounted a major run at 22-19. The Tritons erupted to win the next six points, a sequence that was fired by a pair of service aces from Rowe.

Set number two was all UCSD as the Tritons hit .400 and Stanislaus swung at -.031. After rolling to a 4-0 lead to start the frame, UCSD collected seven consecutive points to get to an insurmountable 21-8 lead. Taylor had two kills and Edrina Nazaradeh had back-to-back blocks, one of them solo, during the run.

Cal State Stanislaus held an early 4-1 lead in the final set before a five-point spree at 9-9 put the Tritons up for good. Two straight kills from Dahle gave UCSD an eight-point lead at 18-10, but the Warriors did not go quietly. They kept chipping away at the Tritons' advantage, getting to within one point at 22-21 following an ace by Melissa Bishop. However, UCSD coach Ricci Luyties called a timeout to regroup and the Tritons came back to floor to score three straight points to take the match. Demos finished it with an ace.

Between sets two and three, a pair of new NCAA runner-up banners were unveiled at RIMAC Arena, signifying the softball and men's swimming and diving teams' second place national finishes in 2012. Overall, UCSD has had 42 teams finish as the national runner-up.

UC San Diego plays a pair of big conference road matches next week. On Friday, Oct. 5, the Tritons take on Sonoma State before heading to the Bay Area to play San Francisco State on Saturday, Oct. 6. All three teams are currently tied for first place in the CCAA.
