LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 10 UC San Diego men's water polo team returned to Canyonview Aquatic Center to take a 16-5 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday night.
The balanced effort by the Tritons raises its overall record to 10-7 overall and 9-2 in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA). The Stags drop to 8-15 and 3-5 in conference.
Cameron Ravanbach played the majority of the game, finishing with 11 saves. Nick Michels added another four saves and an assist.
UCSD's offense was led by three individuals posting hat tricks. Josh Stiling, in his first appearance since the end of September, scored two of his three goals in the opening eight minutes. All three of Luke Syka's goals came from six-on-five opportunities spread throughout the game. Lance Curtiss tacked on all three of his individual goals in the fourth quarter off of quick recognition of Claremont turnovers.
The Tritons' pressure on the Stags caused 15 turnovers throughout the game, six of them coming in the first quarter alone.
UCSD took control from the beginning, scoring early and often to take a 5-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Tritons slowed the pace towards the middle of the game, but picked it up again in the fourth with six goals.
Claremont's largest offensive push came in the fourth quarter as it posted two goals.
The Tritons have a quick turn around, returning to Canyonview Aquatic Center to host Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m.
