CARSON, Calif. -
The 18th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision at Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at Toro Field on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Tritons are now 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 4-7 overall and notched its first league success of the new season, now at 1-5. The result also evened up the four-game series, with UCSD having taken Thursday's opener, 5-1.
For the second day in a row, UCSD struck first in the opening inning, with another run almost solely manufactured by Danny Susdorf. The senior All-American singled to center to lead off, stole second, stole third, and trotted home on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Dillon Moyer. Two batters in, the Tritons already held a 1-0 edge.
In the home half, the Toros moved a runner to third base with two away through a leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt and stolen base of their own, but junior left-hander Justin Rahn induced an inning-ending groundout.
The Tritons doubled their advantage in the second as Richard Seigel singled to begin the frame, stole second with one out, moved to third on an error with two outs, and scored on a two-strike Troy Cruz single to left.
Cal State Dominguez Hills knotted the score in the home second. Aaron Gray drew a base on balls to start things off ahead of a one-out single by Carlos Avila. Danny Haley then sent both of them home with a two-run double down the left field line.
Cruz led off the fifth with a triple, the first of his college career. UCSD left him stranded there, however, as Toro starter Dimitri DeLaFuente got a called third strike, flyout and popout.
The Toros took their first lead of the afternoon in the very next half, and never relinquished that advantage. David Steininger was hit by a David Hart pitch to start the frame, was bunted over to second, advanced to third on a flyout, and scored on a clutch two-out single by Charles Rossman III.
Cal State Dominguez Hills blew things open with a five-run seventh that saw the home side bring 10 men to the plate. The big blow was a two-run double by Avila.
Rahn allowed two runs on two hits and three walks over 2.1 innings of work. He struck out three. Hart (0-2) took the loss. Cruz was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
DeLaFuente (1-0) went the distance, giving up two runs, only one of them earned, on six hits without a walk. He struck out 11. The senior right-hander, who led the Division I Titans of Cal State Fullerton with 22 appearances in 2012, was making his first start for CSUDH after earning two saves over three scoreless relief appearances. DeLaFuente had 1-2-3 frames in the third, fourth, seventh and eighth, and retired nine straight between the sixth and ninth.
Rossman, Avila and Haley all finished 2-for-4 with two RBI on the day. Haley added a two-out triple in the fourth to his big double earlier, accounting for his first two extra-base hits of 2013.
The four-game series between UCSD and Cal State Dominguez Hills now shifts to La Jolla for a Saturday finale. The teams will contest a doubleheader at Triton Ballpark set to begin at 12 p.m.
