Second Place Finish for UCSD at Skyhawk Classic Club Shootout

PALM DESERT, Calif. - The UC San Diego golf team placed second of 10 squads Tuesday at the Skyhawk Shootout, hosted by Fort Lewis College at the Classic Club.

UCSD posted a three-round total of 946, 82-over par and 12 strokes behind winner South Mountain Community College (934, +70). Colorado Mesa placed third (953, +89), Wayland Baptist was fourth (958, +94) and Dominican rounded out the top-five (977, +113).

UC San Diego moved up a spot Tuesday after sitting in third place following Monday's first two rounds. The Tritons steadily improved each round, with their best showing coming Tuesday, a 303 on the par-72, 6,896-yard course. UCSD opened with a 327 and followed with a 316 in the second round.

Lewis Simon and Clayton Yamaguchi were the top individual finishers for UCSD, each totaling a an 18-over 234 to place in a four-way tie for fifth. Simon shot 84-76-74, while Yamaguchi went 80-79-75. It was the first top-five finish this season for both Simon, a junior, and Yamaguchi, a freshman.

Sean Robbins of Colorado Mesa topped the 53-player field as he had a 6-over 222. He shot a 76 in each of the first two rounds and a 70 in the third, which tied with one other player for the low round of the tournament.

Also swinging for UCSD were Jay Lim, Daniel Yang and Ryan Rankin. Lim was 11th with a +20 236 (81-81-74), Yang tied for 23rd with a +31 247 (84-80-83) and Rankin tied for 33rd, shooting a 35-over par 251 (82-89-80). 

As a team, UCSD had the best scoring average on par-3 holes (3.33). The Tritons were second in par-5 scoring (5.23), birdies (24) and pars (141) and third in par-4 scoring (4.59).

Two other California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams were competing. Cal State San Bernardino came in sixth, while Cal State Dominguez Hills was 10th.

The Tritons also placed second at the same tournament last season.

UCSD has finished among the top-10 in all eight events it has competed in this season, including second-place showings in its last two.

The Tritons next play at the Hanny Invitational, hosted by the CCAA's Cal State Stanislaus, April 15-16. The Warriors are currently ranked 15th nationally.
