by UCSD

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - UC San Diego wrapped up competition at the 111th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta Sunday with men's Varsity 8 and JV 8 crews taking part in finals on Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento.

UCSD's Varsity 8 finished fifth in the fourth-level final, while the Tritons' JV 8 boat placed seventh in the third-level final.

The Varsity 8 came across with a time of 6:09.30 in the five-boat final. Dartmouth, ranked 16th nationally, had a winning time of 5:59.24 on the 2,000-meter course. No. 18 Drexel (6:00.79) was second, 20th-ranked Holy Cross (6:05.50) was third and Gonzaga (6:07.14) took fourth.

Rowing in the Varsity 8 boat for UCSD were junior Zach Antunes, junior Zack Attaran, junior Mark Bennett, freshman John Buda, sophomore coxswain Sean Dougherty, freshman Scott Kennedy, sophomore Brendan Stainfield, sophomore Forrest Sundquist and junior Kyle Wilson.

Drexel was the early leader, holding a one-length lead at the 500-meter mark. Dartmouth began its move and took over second place from Holy Cross around the halfway point. With 750 meters to go, the Big Green pulled to within a few seats of Drexel and powered on to win by a second and a half.

In the battle between UCSD and Gonzaga, the Tritons held a slight lead for most of the race until the Bulldogs moved ahead with 400 meters remaining.

UCSD met its goal of improving throughout the weekend as its time of 6:09.30 was the fastest of the crew's four races. On Friday, the Tritons started with a 6:21.71 in their heat and then recorded a 6:16.04 in the repechage. Saturday, UCSD posted a 6:11.21 in its semifinal.

Washington (5:39.68), the No. 1-ranked crew in the country, won the Varsity 8 grand final. No. 8 Yale (5:46.84) topped the field in the petit final and No. 13 Penn (5:54.35) was first in the third-level final.

UCSD got things started Sunday with a seventh-place finish in the JV 8 third-level final. Navy was the winner with a time of 6:00.77. Dartmouth was second in 6:05.27, just in front of third-place Oregon State, which finished in 6:05.70. Stanford (6:07.16) took fourth and Holy Cross (6:08.86) was fifth, while Gonzaga (6:16.38) narrowly edged UCSD (6:16.54) for sixth place.

The Tritons' JV 8 crew was made up of senior coxswain Kasey Benjamin, sophomore Austin Dahlenburg, sophomore Tom Forter, senior Erik Goebel, freshman Jason Heinen, freshman Daniel Mahan, freshman Jack Maxson, junior Kendall Pick and senior Chris Weir.

Stanford led for the first half of the race, but Navy made a move to take the lead away from the Cardinal at the 1,000-meter mark and remained in control to win with open water. UCSD and Gonzaga were even early before the Tritons took a slight lead, only to see the Bulldogs pull it out at the finish line.

As was the case with the Varsity 8, UC San Diego's JV 8 time of 6:16.54 was the crew's fastest of the weekend by far. On Friday, the Tritons went 6:28.21 in their heat race and 6:26.79 in their afternoon repechage.

Washington (5:51.07) won the JV 8 grand final and Harvard (5:59.81) was victorious in the petit final.

Washington was crowned the team national champion as it swept all five grand final races (Varsity 8, JV 8, Freshman 8, Varsity 4, Open 4). It was the third consecutive and 16th overall title for the Huskies.

"This weekend was such an awesome experience for everyone," said UCSD head coach Zach Johnson. "We kept on improving and learned a lot to move forward with, most importantly the incredible speed it takes to compete at this level."

UCSD was competing at the IRA Championships for the third time in program history (2009, 2011). With no seniors on this year's Varsity 8 crew, the Tritons are in great shape for a return trip in 2014.
