SAN DIEGO - The UC San Diego men's rowing team wrapped up first day action at the 41st San Diego Crew Classic Saturday on Mission Bay, with one boat qualifying for a Grand Final.
UCSD's Novice 8 crew punched its Grand Final ticket by placing second in its heat Saturday with a time of 6:23.1, just behind UC Davis' winning time of 6:21.8. The Tritons placed in front of British Columbia (6:25.7), UCLA (6:32.4) and USC (6:48.4).
The Novice 8 Grand Final goes off at 12:20 p.m. Sunday. Also in the field will be UC Davis, Orange Coast College, Cal, the University of San Diego and UC Santa Barbara.
Both of UCSD's other crews will compete in Petite Finals Sunday.
In the Collegiate Invitational Varsity 8, the Tritons placed fifth in their heat, crossing the finish line in 6:14.6. Cal won the heat with a time of 5:52.2.
The Varsity 8 Petite Final is set for 9:40 a.m. Sunday. The Tritons will be racing against Michigan RA, Gonzaga, UC Santa Barbara and Trinity (Conn.).
UCSD took fifth of eight crews in its 2nd Varsity 8 heat. Northeastern posted a winning time of 5:58.0. The Tritons' 6:17.3 put them in front of UCLA (6:30.4), Santa Clara (6:33.6) and Long Beach State (7:11.9).
The 2nd Varsity 8 Petite Final will take place at 8:40 a.m. Sunday. Alongside UCSD will be UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UCLA, Washington State, Santa Clara, San Diego State and Long Beach State.
Sunday's races will be streamed live for a fee at crewclassic.org.
