WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego’s Alec Arsht was named Monday evening as the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6.
Arsht played all 180 minutes at center back in a pair of 2-0 road wins for 10th-ranked UCSD this past weekend, as the Tritons ascended Friday into sole possession of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division. Arsht and his back-line mates allowed only 12 shots in the two contests combined, with just two of those attempts on frame. In addition to his defensive influence, the fourth-year senior out of Oak Park headed in his first goal of the campaign in the 29th minute to put UCSD up 2-0 at Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
The weekend results stretched UCSD’s incredible run to six straight victories, all in shutout fashion. The Tritons, now 8-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the CCAA, have not surrendered a score in 583:59, now their longest such period since moving up from Division III to Division II for the 2000 season, bettering a shutout string of 503:37 from just a year ago, when they led the entire Division II in team goals-against average (0.44) and shutout percentage (0.71). The current mark stands at 0.29, with seven clean sheets in 10 matches (0.70). The six-game win streak is also UCSD’s best since a nine-gamer in 1996.
Arsht, fellow senior center back Gavin Lamming, junior left back Matthew McClure and redshirt freshman right back Brett Sampiere (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) have made up the defensive foursome in front of senior goalkeeper Josh Cohen for virtually every minute of this current string. Arsht and Cohen were both second-team Daktronics All-Americans as juniors a year ago.
The award is the first of Arsht’s career. He is the second Triton men’s soccer player to earn the conference’s weekly honor in 2013, following Lamming back on Sept. 24.
Having completed a tough season-opening draw of seven of its first 10 matches away from home, UCSD finally returns home to contest seven of its final eight regular-season games in La Jolla. A season-long six-game homestand begins this Friday night, Oct. 11, against Cal State San Bernardino. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is slated for 7 p.m., after the UCSD women take on the Coyotes at 4:30 p.m.
