Another Academic Honor for Alec Arsht
Release: Wednesday 12/16/2013

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - UC San Diego men’s soccer standout Alec Arsht was chosen Monday to the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Division Men’s Scholar All-West Region First Team.

The senior Oak Park native made the 11-player first team as one of four defenders. The NSCAA’s College Division includes all NCAA Division II, III and NAIA programs.

The award continues an impressive list of postseason honors for Arsht. He previously earned NSCAA All-America Second Team, Daktronics All-America Second Team, Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, NSCAA All-West Region First Team, Daktronics All-West Region First Team, All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) First Team and Capital One Academic All-District 8 First Team distinction.

As team captain, Arsht anchored a back line that was No. 4 nationally in goals-against average at 0.52 after leading all of Division II in that category in 2012. He started all 21 games in which he appeared, adding one goal and an assist offensively.

In the classroom, Arsht maintains a 3.45 grade-point average through the 2012-13 academic year, and will graduate in June with a degree in political science.

To be eligible for NSCAA Scholar All-West Region, student-athletes were required to have a 3.30 GPA and significant athletic credentials, on par with all-region status. Only juniors and seniors in academic standing were eligible, meaning that Andisheh Bagheri, like Arsht a Capital One Academic All-American, was unable to be considered as a UCSD graduate student.

As a first-teamer at the regional level, Arsht may now be selected in the coming days to one of the NSCAA Scholar All-America squads.

Lee Nishanian of Cal State San Bernardino and Taylor Varnadore of Sonoma State, both seniors, also represented the CCAA on the first team. A total of eight student-athletes garnered honorable mention.
