Ryan Hernandez Promoted to Associate Head Coach of Men's Soccer Program
Release: Wednesday 03/22/2014
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego men’s soccer head coach Jon Pascale has promoted Ryan Hernandez to the position of associate head coach of the Triton program.

Hernandez has completed six seasons on the La Jolla campus. He joined Pascale’s first staff in 2008, and became the top assistant for the 2013 campaign. UCSD has produced a winning record in five of the last six years, and each of the past four.

“Ryan has been instrumental to the success of the team,” said Pascale. “He plays a large part in running every aspect of the program, and has taken the lead in handling the day-to-day operations of the office. He has really come into his own as a coach, and continues to excel in the management of our players. He is an extremely hard worker, loyal to a fault, and takes great pride in being part of the UCSD community.”

The 2013 season was the most successful for UCSD since it moved up to the NCAA Division II level back in 2000. The Tritons finished 14-3-5 overall and 11-2-3 in the CCAA, achieving their most overall wins since 1993, most overall victories in the Division II era, and most-ever CCAA wins. They made their first CCAA Championship appearance since 2005 and earned a first NCAA Division II Championship berth since 2003, advancing to the CCAA Championship and NCAA West Region finals.

UCSD was up to sixth nationally at one point during the regular season, marking its highest ranking in Division II, and finished at No. 9.

Working closely with the Triton defense, Hernandez has overseen a group that topped the entire nation in Division II in team goals-against average (0.44) and shutout percentage (0.71) in 2012, and was fourth in team goals-against average (0.52) in 2013. UCSD has boasted the CCAA’s top defense in both of these past two years, with a conference-record mark in 2012.

Prior to his arrival at UCSD, Hernandez held coaching positions at alma maters Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa and Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, as well as with Pateadores Soccer Club. In addition to his duties with the Tritons, he is currently the boy’s varsity head coach at San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA). Hernandez has led SDJA to the CIF San Diego Section Division IV playoffs in all five of his seasons, as well as claiming two Pacific League titles.

After attaining his associate degree from Orange Coast College in 2004, Hernandez earned a Bachelor of Arts in communications from Cal State Fullerton in 2007. He and his wife, Stacey, now reside in Encinitas.
