LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior forward Evan Walker scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute as the UC San Diego men's soccer team knocked off visiting Sonoma State 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field.

After the two squads traded goals early in the second half, the Tritons were able to come through with the game-winner late to defeat one of the top teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division.

UCSD improves to 8-8-0 overall and 7-7-0 in CCAA play with the win, its second of the weekend. After losing four straight from October 7-16, the Tritons have bounced back with consecutive victories over Humboldt State and Sonoma State heading into the final week of the regular season.

SSU falls to 9-5-2 overall and 9-3-2 in conference with the loss. The Seawolves went 0-1-1 this weekend after playing Cal State San Bernardino to a 1-1 draw on Friday and losing to the Tritons.

After a very evenly played first half, sophomore midfielder Cory Wolfrom put UCSD on the board first in the 50th minute. Forward Sam Ball got the ball just outside the 18-yard box, took a touch and then played it out to a sweeping Wolfrom on his left. In stride, Wolfrom sent a perfectly placed shot to the upper right corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

Sonoma, which quickly came back with more offensive-minded personnel, answered with the equalizer at the 67:43 mark. Brian Angel connected with Just Ferreira in the box, but Triton goalkeeper Josh Cohen was there to deflect Ferreira’s header. The ball bounced back into play, however, and the Seawolves’ Taylor Varnadore came crashing in to punch it home and tie the match at one.

While the goal was a big one for the visitors, it came with a price as forward Jomed Tejan was issued a red card for taunting on the play.

Playing with a man advantage, the Tritons had a hand full of opportunities to reclaim the lead in regulation. The best chance came less than a minute away from overtime when Wolform centered a pass in the box for Walker, who quickly headed the ball towards the goal. His attempt would bounced and hit the post and Seawolf netminder Taylor Jones was able to swallow it up.

Walker had another look early in the second overtime period when he received an excellent cross from Ball, but he couldn't get a quality foot on the ball and missed wide left.

The Costa Mesa native had another opportunity less than two minutes later and this time, he came through. Andrew Keimach won a ball just passed midfield and dribbled up the left side. Seeing Walker streaking into the box, Keimach sent a low pass his way and Walker calmly slipped it past Jones for the game-winner at the 105:36 mark.

It was Walker’s second goal of the season.

The match proved to be tight throughout as both squads finished with 12 shots on the day. The Tritons held a slim 7-6 edge on corner kicks. It was as chippy as it was close, with a total of 27 fouls called and seven cautions issued in addition to Tejan’s ejection.

UCSD will return to action next weekend when San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona come to town. The Tritons will host the Gators on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. before taking on the Broncos on Sunday at noon.
