Release: Saturday 09/14/2012
by UCSD

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Cal State L.A. scored with five minutes remaining in the second overtime period to take a 1-0 sudden-death victory over UC San Diego in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer action Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Track.

Both teams moved to 3-2-0 overall on the season and remained atop the CCAA South Division standings.

The game-winner came at the 105:04 mark. Defender Dane Nielsen got to a loose ball inside midfield and lofted it deep into the box. After deflecting off a UCSD defender, Antti Arvola collected it and drilled a shot just inside the near post.

The Tritons ended up out-shooting the Golden Eagles, 10-9.

UCSD had a solid attempt early in the game as Gavin Lamming just missed on a header off a corner kick from Alex Portela. Just a minute later, Tsuk Haroush extended UCSD's attack, but CSULA keeper Waleed Cassis earned the first of his four saves to keep the game scoreless. Portela, Andrew Keimach and Scott MacBride each had two shots in the game.

UC San Diego keeper Josh Cohen finished with two saves on the afternoon.

The Tritons and Golden Eagles meet again on Oct. 12 at Triton Soccer Field in La Jolla.

UCSD has a chance to bounce back Sunday when it plays at Cal State San Bernardino in another CCAA match-up. The game is slated for a noon start.
