LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team powered through a tough 90 minutes to take a 1-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday evening under the lights at Triton Soccer Field.
UCSD improved to 5-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in CCAA play. CSUDH is now 3-5-1 and 3-4-0.
"That was a really good team we beat tonight, The best attacking players that we've seen so far," said UCSD head coach Jon Pascale.
The match went nearly 30 minutes before either team made their first substitution, showing their endurance in the first half.
"The first half I thought was very even," said Pascale. "I thought both teams played well, we attacked well and got some good chances. We had a game plan to start and I thought it worked really well."
The games' single goal came in the 21st minute. Senior Alex Portela chipped the ball to center where classmate Evan Walker was there to connect with the header into the right corner of the cage.
Cal State Dominguez Hills came out with a vengeance in the second half, out-shooting the Tritons 10-1. The Toros' aggressive attack was a little too quick, as they had two goals called back due to being offsides.
UCSD goalkeeper Cameron McElfresh finished with four saves.
UCSD hosts Cal State San Bernardino Sunday, Oct. 30. The match is set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. at Triton Soccer Field.
