Rowing Teams Post Solid Results at San Diego Fall Classic
Release: Wednesday 11/11/2013
by UCSD

SAN DIEGO - The UC San Diego men's and women's rowing teams wrapped up their preseason competition schedules Sunday at the San Diego Fall Classic on Mission Bay.

UCSD's men rowed to a pair of victories on the day. In the Open 8+ race, the Varsity 8 topped the field with a time of 14:58, beating crews from the University of San Diego, San Diego State, UC Davis and Arizona State. The Triton JV 8 crew recorded a time of 15:57 to place fourth in the event.

In the Men's Open Novice 8+ race, UCSD dominated, winning in 15:44. USD was a distant second, coming in 34 seconds behind at 16:18.

"Our goal this weekend was to win every event we were entered in and we did that successfully," said UCSD men's head coach Zach Johnson. "The varsity executed well on our home water and stayed composed when USD made a huge charge at the beginning of the event. Our freshmen are starting to show their potential after only a few weeks rowing together, and despite not having their best day, were able to put together a win."

The top finish for the UCSD women came in the Open Novice 8+, where the Tritons took third with a time of 19:20. The University of San Diego was first (18:01) and San Diego State was second (18:30).

The Triton women had three boats entered in the Open 8+ category and placed ninth (18:31), 11th (18:55) and 14th (20:19). USD won the race with a time of 16:25.

In the Women's Open 4+, UCSD's boats finished 10th (20:40), 12th (21:27) and 13th (21:37). USC posted a top time of 18:06.

"The results from this past weekend were not as good as I had expected," said UCSD head women's coach Colin Truex. "The intensity wasn't quite where it should have been and that comes back to preparation. The team worked hard but just didn't push the way they could have. We have some work to do and we are looking forward to getting back to it."

Both the UCSD men and women will not compete again until March 1, 2014, when they travel to Long Beach to row against Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and the University of San Diego.

"We've had one of our best groups this fall and the team chemistry and work ethic they have shown will take them far, but we have a lot to work on going forward," said Johnson. "Our team goal this year is to finish higher at the National Championships. That will take a team effort against tough competition, but we are looking forward to the challenge.”
