Release: Saturday 11/19/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego men’s and women’s fencing teams hosted the 18th Annual BladeRunner Tournament Nov. 16-17 with 295 competitors descending upon RIMAC Arena for the event.

Part of the Regional Open Circuit, the individual U.S. Fencing competition featured athletes from across the country. Saturday’s action included women’s epee and saber as well as men’s foil. Women’s foil, along with men’s epee and saber, wrapped up the tournament Sunday.

The format was a round of pools into direct elimination.

On the men's side, UCSD fencers won silver medals in saber and epee. Team captain Bryson Abilay took a silver in saber, working his way through 49 other saberists. Teammate Peter Meckling finished with a bronze. Freshman Sean Callaghan had an impressive performance with a second place finish in a field of 75 epeeists. Other noteworthy results included Eduard Zilinskiy’s eighth-place performance in foil.

The Triton women achieved their strongest results in saber, with Megan Gesner finishing in sixth place. She was accompanied on the medal stand by teammate Karinne Caisse, who finished eighth.

Next up, the Tritons head to Stanford to participate in the West Invitational on Jan. 11, 2014.
