TURLOCK, Calif. – Alexis Edwards won her 13th and 14th games of the season on day two of the Tournament of Champions Saturday at Pedretti Sports Complex to put No. 20 UC San Diego 4-1 after pool play. Edwards delivered a complete game shutout in the opener to power UCSD over Hawaii Pacific, 3-0, before entering in relief to lead the Tritons to a win in the nightcap against Notre Dame de Namur, 7-4.
UCSD improves to 26-7 overall following the day sweep. The Tritons beat Chaminade and No. 2 California Baptist and fell to Dominican on day one of the TOC. The Tritons move into the Platinum Bracket and face Montana State Billings tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
The opener started with two clean innings to begin play before the Tritons scored two in the bottom of the third on two hits and one Sea Warrior error. McKenna Clewett singled to start the inning and Emily McQuaid reached on a fielder’s choice, which moved Clewett to third. After McQuaid stole second, Callie Grant singled to bring home the pair of runs and put UCSD ahead 2-0.
HPU threatened the next half inning by loading the bases with only one out, but just as Edwards has done all season, the sophomore lefty escaped the jam by retiring consecutive batters on a pop-out to short and a fly-out to center field.
UCSD added a run in the fourth to make the score 3-0 on a Clewett RBI single to center field to score Mya Romero, who walked to start the inning.
The three runs proved to be plenty as Edwards cruised through the final three frames to pick up her 13th win of the season. She only allowed one hit in the last three innings. In her first complete game shutout, she gave up four hits and struck out two. The sophomore lowered her team-leading ERA to 1.50.
The offense was led by a pair of hits, a run scored and an RBI from Clewett. Romero and McQuaid scored a run apiece. McQuaid also stole a base, giving her a career total of 60.
Grant’s multi-hit game streak ended at eight games. Her single in the third inning did extend her hitting streak to eight games, however. Caitlin Brown’s reached base streak ended at 16 games after not recording a hit, walk or hit-by-pitch.
In the afternoon game, The Tritons scored three runs in the final two frames to move UCSD over NDNU 7-4.
Emma Schneider, just as she did in the game against California Baptist, connected on a two-run home run in the top of the first to put UCSD ahead 2-0. It was Schneider’s third homer of the season to put her tied with Katie Saunders for the team lead.
The Tritons added single runs in the third and fourth to make the score 4-0 after four frames. Brown singled to left field to bring home Grant in the third before Clewett doubled home Kirsten Willmon in the fourth. Willmon also stole her fifth base of the season in the inning.
After keeping the Argonaut offense at bay for the first four innings, UCSD allowed four runs in the fifth to tie the game 4-4. The blow in the inning came on a three-run home run from Breanna Young.
The Tritons responded the following inning, however, and grabbed the lead right back after manufacturing a run. After two quick outs, Willmon doubled down the right field line and was brought home by Clewett, who singled to right field on a 1-2 pitch to make the score 5-4.
UCSD added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh on three hits and one Argonaut error to extend the cushion to 7-4. After Grant reached on an error and was singled to third by Amani Proctor, Brown recorded an RBI bunt single to score the centerfielder. Saunders plated the final run of the inning with a single down the left field line to score Proctor.
The Tritons sealed the win with a quick seventh by retiring NDNU in order.
Edwards (14-2) was credited with the win after throwing 2.2 hitless innings of relief. She allowed one walk and struck out two batters while lowering her team-leading ERA to 1.46. Alayna Brenman started the game and was sharp until NDNU got to her in the fifth. She finished with four innings pitched, surrendering two earned runs and struck out two. She allowed one hit, but walked two and hit three batters.
The offense was led by three hits and two RBI from Clewett. It was her sixth multiple RBI performance and 13th multi-hit effort on the season. Brown and Schneider also recorded two RBI for the Tritons, while Proctor and Willmon knocked two hits as well.
Pending the outcome of the game against MSUB, UCSD has an opportunity to play at 2:30 p.m. to finish out play at the Tournament of Champions.
