Lizotte, Guiliana Total 15 Goals to Power No. 13 UCSD to Day Sweep

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Sarah Lizotte scored eight goals and dished out five assists and Jolene Guiliana totaled seven scores on the day as No. 13 UC San Diego downed Cal State East Bay, 10-3, and Pacific, 13-11, Sunday at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

UCSD improves to 22-10 overall following the day sweep. The win over CSUEB moves the Tritons to 3-0 in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA).

Game One
The Tritons used a strong defensive effort to down Cal State East Bay in the opener, 10-3. The three goals allowed marked the fourth time this season UCSD has surrendered three goals or less, while the offense has tallied 10 goals or more in four straight games.

UCSD scored three times in the opening period and tallied four goals in the second to lead 7-2 at the intermission.

The Tritons closed out the win by holding the Pioneers to one goal in the second half and tallied three on the offensive side to seal the 10-3 victory.

Lizotte and Guiliana each scored four times for UCSD, while Julia Kirkland and Lauren Boyer rounded out the scoring with a tally each.

Leah Gonzales and Laurel Kistler contributed a pair of assists each in the win.

The defense was led by Courtney Miller’s 10 saves in the cage.

Game Two
The Tritons used a strong third quarter to take control of the nightcap and down Pacific, 13-11.

UCSD led 3-2 after the opening quarter and held a slight advantage at the intermission, 5-4.

The offense exploded for six goals in the third period to take control of the game before finishing out the win with a pair of scores in the final frame to win, 13-11.

Lizotte led the charge offensively for UCSD and finished with four goals and four assists. Guiliana recorded a hat trick in the win, while Melissa Bartow and Julia Kirkland tallied a pair of goals each. Leah Gonzales and Lauren Boyer rounded out the scoring with a tally each.

Miller finished with 11 saves in the cage, while Guiliana amassed four steals to lead the Triton defense.

The offense has now scored 10 or more scores in five straight games after finding the back of the cage 13 times. UCSD outscored UOP 4-0 on counter attack goals in the win.

The Tritons continue WWPA action next week with a single game against Cal State San Bernardino at Canyonview Aquatic Center on Friday, Apr. 11 at 6 p.m.
