WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Senior right-handed ace Ryan Goodbrand of the 22nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team was named Monday as the new season's first Rawlings/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week.

Goodbrand, a native of Rancho Santa Margarita, eased into his final year of college baseball with five innings of scoreless work in a 6-2 win over then-No. 20 Colorado Mesa last Friday, Feb. 1, on Opening Night at Triton Ballpark. On a pitch limit to begin the new campaign, he allowed just three hits without a walk, striking out six while inducing another four ground-ball outs. He left the contest after 76 tosses, having retired the final eight batters he faced.

The winning decision meant a 12-0 career record for Goodbrand as a Triton, as he posted an unblemished 11-0 ledger over 15 starts a year ago after transferring from Irvine Valley College. He previously pitched at Irvine's Concordia University as a true freshman in 2010. Friday also marked a fifth straight start with a win since his last no-decision. UCSD improved to 14-2 when Goodbrand takes the hill.

Goodbrand, the 2012 CCAA Co-Newcomer of the Year and an All-CCAA First Team pick, is now a two-time CCAA Pitcher of the Week after gaining the distinction last year on Feb. 27.

David Garcia, Cal State Monterey Bay's senior third baseman, picked up Rawlings/CCAA Player of the Week honors after hitting .714 with two home runs and six RBI during a three-game sweep in San Diego over Point Loma Nazarene.

Coming off the two-games-to-one series victory over the higher-ranked Mavericks over the weekend, the Tritons next face their first road test of 2013 when they travel by bus to Phoenix, Ariz., this Thursday, Feb. 7. UCSD will contest another three-game non-conference set at Grand Canyon University's Brazell Stadium, Friday through Sunday, Feb. 8-10. First pitch for the opener is set for 6 p.m. PT with Goodbrand again taking the ball from second-year Triton head coach Eric Newman.
