POMONA, Calif. -
Senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Goodbrand
of the 21st-ranked UC San Diego Tritons has been chosen as the season's first National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region Pitcher of the Week. This initial award encompasses the first two weeks of the year, Feb. 1-10.
Goodbrand has begun his 2013 campaign on a tear, tossing 11.0 scoreless frames over his first two starts, both winning decisions. The ace has allowed just five hits and two walks while striking out 11. Opposing batters have hit .128 against him.
This is Goodbrand's second career NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Week selection, following a nod on Feb. 28, 2012. He was named the Rawlings/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 4 after throwing 5.0 innings of shutout baseball in UCSD's season-opening home win over then-No. 20 Colorado Mesa on Friday night, Feb. 1.
The native of Rancho Santa Margarita who spent his freshman year at Concordia University in Irvine and sophomore season at Irvine Valley College, is 13-0 in a Triton uniform through 17 starts, and has earned six consecutive wins since his last no-decision, going back to a 2012 campaign in which he was the CCAA Co-Newcomer of the Year and earned All-America honorable mention. Goodbrand has gone at least 5.0 innings in all 17 appearances, and UCSD is 15-2 when he pitches.
Cal State L.A.'s Cody Doyle (26 AB, 15 H, 9 RBI, 4 2B, 1 HR) was named the NCBWA West Region Player of the Week. Doyle and Goodbrand are now candidates for national weekly honors, which will be announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Goodbrand will next take the ball from second-year Triton head coach Eric Newman this Friday night, Feb. 15, when UCSD opens defense of its four straight CCAA regular-season titles against Cal State Stanislaus at 6 p.m. at Triton Ballpark.
