SAN DIEGO, Calif. - UC San Diego baseball pitcher Ryan Goodbrand and swimmer Anji Shakya were each named Tuesday as San Diego Hall of Champions Breitbard Stars of the Month for February.

Goodbrand put together a remarkable first month of the 2013 season. The senior right-hander bookended successful outings on both the first and last day of February in posting a 5-0 win-loss mark and ERA of 1.41 (32.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 34 SO). Goodbrand began his final college campaign with an incredible 31 straight shutout innings before surrendering a five-run sixth in his most recent appearance (Feb. 28). He currently leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in wins and strikeouts, having fanned a career-high 11 over seven shutout frames in his third start on Feb. 15. During the month, Goodbrand was a one-time National Pitcher of the Week as named by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and D2 Baseball News, a two-time NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Week and two-time Rawlings/CCAA Pitcher of the Week. Hitters are batting just .168 against him on the season. In addition to being 5-0 so far in 2013, Goodbrand is a perfect 16-0 for his Triton career and has earned a winning decision in nine straight starts going back to last year.

Shakya was named the women's swimmer of the meet as the top female point-getter at the 2013 Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference (PCSC) Championships in La Mirada, Feb. 13-16. The junior co-captain led the third-ranked Triton women to a fifth consecutive conference crown by winning three individual events in the 200 free (1:48.24), 500 free (4:48.19) and 200 back (2:01.35), as well as anchoring the first-place 800 free relay on the first night. She set school records in the 200 free and 500 free, lowering her own mark in the latter, and also broke conference meet standards in both events. Shakya's performance in La Mirada earned her National Division II Women's Swimmer of the Week recognition from CollegeSwimming.com. She began her month of February by winning a pair of individual events (200 free, 200 back) to lead UCSD to a narrow home win, 156.5-143.5, over crosstown Division I rival University of San Diego on Feb. 2.

The two Triton student-athletes were among nine recipients at the amateur level. February's professional honorees included NASCAR driver and Daytona 500 winner Jimmie Johnson (Granite Hills HS), pro golfer Phil Mickelson (Univ. of San Diego HS) and San Diego Sockers standout Aaron Susi. A total of 17 athletes were chosen.

Shakya and her teammates are currently in Birmingham, Ala., for the 2013 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, which begin on Wednesday, Mar. 6, and continue through Saturday, Mar. 9. Goodbrand will next take the mound this Friday, Mar. 8, in the opener of a four-game CCAA series at No. 22 Sonoma State.
