LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego baseball program has announced three National Letter-of-Intent commitments for the early signing period from November. The announcement was made by third-year Triton head coach Eric Newman.

The three additions are Erik Amundson, Anthony Sommer and Tristan Tardiff, all current seniors at California high schools and right-handed pitching prospects. The trio will arrive on the La Jolla campus in the fall ahead of the 2015 season.

Amundson was a starting pitcher and centerfielder as a junior on the varsity team at Menlo-Atherton High School in the Bay Area. Batting leadoff, he hit .360 and stole 25 bases on 25 attempts while posting an ERA of just over 2.00. An All-Peninsula Athletic League (PAL) Bay Division First Team selection as a pitcher, Amundson was voted the Bears’ MVP by teammates. Last summer, he continued to play in the Trosky Baseball system at the under-18 level. Amundson previously competed on the frosh-soph squad at M-A, prior to getting moved up to varsity early in his sophomore year.

“We feel very fortunate to have Erik coming into our program next fall,” said Newman. “Erik has a strong baseball IQ, and all the people we talked to about him had high praise for his character and ability. He is a strong competitor on the mound. He possesses good fastball command and a good breaking ball, and will only improve as he matures.”

Sommer has been a starter on the varsity baseball team at Aliso Niguel High School since his freshman year, and is now a captain heading into his senior campaign. He was an All-Sea View League (SVL) First Team pick as a sophomore, and earned a weekly Stat Star recognition from ESPNHS California/Cal-Hi Sports after driving in five runs for the Wolverines in their 16-3 win over Trabuco Hills in the 2012 CIF Southern Section Division II semifinals. ANHS ultimately lost in the final at Dodger Stadium. Sommer was a repeat first-team all-league selection as a junior while the Wolverines won the SVL crown before being eliminated in the CIFSS quarterfinals. A strong student, he maintains a 3.69 grade-point average, and has completed each semester at ANHS with at least a 3.5 GPA.

“Anthony was our first commitment this summer, and it really excited us that he wanted to come be a part of our program,” remarked Newman. “He already possesses excellent fastball command and a swing-and-miss breaking ball. Anthony is only going to get better and has his best baseball still in front of him. We are excited about Anthony’s future with UC San Diego baseball.”

Tardiff played on the varsity team at Laguna Hills High School as a junior during the 2013 season. He spent the summer and fall playing for Trosky SoCal and the Tampa Bay Rays scout team. At the 2013 PG/Evoshield National Championship in Goodyear, Ariz., Tardiff pitched in two games for a total of six innings with 10 strikeouts as Trosky made it to the quarterfinals.

“Tristan has a strong arm and good command of both his fastball and breaking ball,” said Newman. “We followed Tristan all last summer and fell in love with his attitude and make-up as a pitcher. He is only going to continue to progress, and we feel Tristan will quickly find a role on our pitching staff.”

UCSD (2-0), ranked No. 39 in the NCAA Division II, hosts California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foe Cal State L.A. (0-3) in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 8, to kick off a three-game series with the Golden Eagles that will not count toward the teams’ conference record. First pitch at Triton Ballpark is set for 2 p.m. Cal State L.A. is the reigning CCAA tournament champion.
