Nick La Face Earns Capital One Academic All-District Honors for Second Straight Year
Release: Thursday 05/01/2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego’s Nick La Face was named Thursday to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District® Baseball First Team for the NCAA Division II District 8, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

This is the second straight time that the fifth-year senior out of North Hollywood (Notre Dame HS) has earned the distinction. La Face once again advances to the Capital One Academic All-America® ballot, joining seven other selections from his region at the district level.

UCSD’s District 8 includes programs from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Pacific West Conference. Five of the eight Academic All-District® 8 baseball players for Division II hail from the CCAA, with two pitchers from sixth-ranked league rival Chico State. La Face took up the designated hitter spot.

In the classroom, La Face maintained a 3.36 grade-point average in political science with a minor in education studies, having already completed his undergraduate degree requirements at the conclusion of the winter quarter.

A catcher and designated hitter, La Face has saved his best for last in one final year on the field in a Triton uniform. He has played in 41 of 42 games, starting all 41, and is hitting a team-best .368, third in the CCAA. La Face leads the league in doubles (17-tied), triples (4-tied), walks (37) and on-base percentage (.511), and is second in RBI (41) and slugging percentage (.583). He also paces UCSD in home runs (2-tied) and total bases (84). La Face has posted single-season highs in batting average, triples, RBI, walks, slugging percentage and on-base percentage, with his 34 runs and 17 doubles matching his career bests.

La Face ranks second on the all-time UCSD chart with 124 walks, sixth with 56 doubles and ninth with 133 RBI. He currently ranks fourth in the entire nation in the NCAA Division II in walks per game, at 0.90, and is tied for eighth in total walks.

Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America® programs.

The 20th-ranked Tritons, now 29-13 overall and 23-9 in the CCAA, begin a four-game, split-venue league series with Cal State San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. Following another 3 p.m. meeting on Friday, the action shifts to Triton Ballpark in La Jolla Saturday for a Senior Day doubleheader at 2 p.m. La Face and six senior teammates will be recognized for their career contributions in between games of the twin bill.

UCSD has already clinched a spot in the 2014 CCAA Championship, and regardless of results this week, will travel to Stockton on Wednesday, May 7, for the four-team, double-elimination tournament taking place May 8-11 at Banner Island Ballpark.
