LA JOLLA, Calif. - Several members of the UC San Diego baseball program are keeping their skills sharp by playing for squads in sanctioned summer leagues.
Fifteen Tritons are competing for nine teams across five states, those being California, Alaska, Kansas, Illinois and Massachusetts.
Troy Cruz is playing for the four-time (2006, 2008, 2011, 2012) National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series champion Santa Barbara Foresters. Erik Lewis joins him in the California Collegiate League (CCL) with the San Louis Obispo Blues. He scored three times in a 10-4 win at the Conejo Oaks in his Blues debut last Friday, June 13. Jack Larsen, Eric Moersen and 2014 redshirt John Erhardt are teammates for a third CCL club, the Santa Paula Halos.
For a second straight summer, Trevor Scott trades coasts to play for the North Adams (Mass.) SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Dan Kolodin and Chad Rieser, both of whom, like Scott, will be senior hurlers for the Tritons during the 2015 season, are in Alaska (Kenai) with the Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska Baseball League.
Andrew Hobson, Christian Leung and Jesse Lewis are on the roster of the defending Golden State Collegiate Baseball League champion Alameda Merchants. Hobson is in his second successive summer with the club after batting .340 (32-for-94) and slugging a team-best .500 with 24 runs scored and 17 RBI for the Merchants in 2013. Also remaining in California are Gradeigh Sanchez and Travis Roberts, who spent the 2014 season as a UCSD team manager. They are teammates for Fontanetti’s up in the Bay Area.
In addition to those Tritons, right-handed pitcher Alon Leichman continues to represent his native country of Israel this summer. Leichman, a Cypress College transfer, was forced to sit out the 2014 campaign due to injury. He is recovering from late-season surgery in preparation for the Confederation of European Baseball’s C pool qualifying tournament of the European Baseball Championship in Ljubljana, Slovenia, July 29-Aug. 2. Israel opens the eight-team event with pool play, facing Finland on July 29, host Slovenia on July 30 and Latvia on July 31.
