LA JOLLA, Calif. - Several members of the UC San Diego baseball team are keeping their skills sharp by playing for squads in sanctioned summer leagues.

Fourteen current Tritons, as well as three incoming signees, are competing for 13 different teams across two countries and six states, including California, Alaska, Kansas, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Washington.

Among the most notable is Justin Rahn playing for the two-time defending National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series champion Santa Barbara Foresters. Scott Zeman is with the Kelowna Falcons, the lone Canadian representative of the West Coast League in Kelowna, British Columbia. Trevor Scott and Garrett Tuck switched coasts to spend their 2013 summer season together with the North Adams (Mass.) SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

In the professional ranks, eight former Tritons are playing for various Minor League Baseball (MiLB) and independent teams. Vance Albitz was promoted to Triple-A Memphis on May 12 after initially beginning the season with the Redbirds. He was assigned to the Double-A Springfield Cardinals again on June 10.

Tim Shibuya, who had been on the Class A Cedar Rapids Kernels’ 7-Day Disabled List since the start of the season, was assigned to the Minnesota Twins' Rookie affiliate, the Elizabethton Twins, on Wednesday, June 19. Following surgery at the end of October to remove a bone spur from his shoulder, the Tritons' all-time leader in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts had been in rehabilitation since January at the Twins' spring-training facility in Fort Myers, Fla. Shibuya did not miss a beat in his first return to the mound in over eight months on Thursday, June 20, as he tossed 4.1 scoreless frames (2 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) in relief and earned the winning decision as the Twins opened defense of their 2012 Appalachian League title with a 3-0 home decision at Joe O'Brien Field over the Bristol White Sox. Dillon Moyer, the 38th-round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 8, signed a professional contract on Sunday, June 16, forgoing his final season of college eligibility. Having earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology in three years, Moyer was assigned that same day to the Opening Day roster of the Dodgers’ Rookie affiliate in the Pioneer League, the Ogden Raptors. The Raptors, based in Ogden, Utah, begin heir 2013 season on Thursday, June 20, at the Grand Junction Rockies.
