LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego baseball player Garrett Tuck has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association West Region Player of the Week as well as the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Over five games last week, Tuck led the Tritons in batting average (.611), runs (7), hits (11), doubles (3), total bases (14), slugging percentage (.778) and on-base percentage (.667).
The sophomore shortstop had a hit in every game with multiple hits in four of five. On Apr. 16 against Cal State Dominguez Hills in La Jolla, he went 4-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and two doubles. He scored a career-high four runs vs. Cal State San Bernardino on Apr. 21, also at Triton Ballpark.
"We are very proud of Garrett and his accomplishments," said UCSD head coach Eric Newman. "He is a great team player and is very focused on getting better every day, which has really paid off this year."
Tuck has reached base safely in 21 straight games and currently holds a seven-game hit streak. Overall this season, he leads the Tritons in batting average (.393), hits (64) and sacrifice flies (6) and is second in RBI (27), total bases (72), on-base percentage (.435) and stolen bases (13).
Tuck also earned the CCAA award in mid-March after batting .600 with three runs scored, five RBI, a .667 slugging percentage, a .579 on-base percentage and three steals over four games at San Francisco State.
He is the second Triton to be honored by both factions this season. Ryan Goodbrand was tabbed the NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Week and CCAA Pitcher of the Week in late February.
UCSD (26-18, 24-12), currently in first place in the CCAA, wraps up its league schedule this week with a home-and-home, four-game series against Cal State L.A. (22-16, 18-14). The first two games will be played at Triton Ballpark on Thursday, Apr. 26 and Friday, Apr. 27, at 6 p.m.
Triton Ballpark will play host to the 2012 CCAA Baseball Tournament May 10-12.
