LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego baseball player Danny Susdorf has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association West Region Player of the Week as well as the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week.
Over a four-game series against conference opponent Cal State L.A., Susdorf hit .462 (6-for-13) with an .846 slugging percentage and a .588 on-base percentage. The junior center fielder had at least one hit in every game, including three doubles and a triple. He scored five total runs, matching a career-high by crossing the plate four times in the second game vs. the Golden Eagles.
Susdorf scored the game-winning run in the series opener, a 3-0 victory at Triton Ballpark. He led off the first and third innings of that game by doubling and reached base safely to lead off the first, sixth and eighth innings of the second contest (single, triple, walk).
Susdorf's triple in the sixth inning of game two was his ninth of the year, tying the UCSD record for three-baggers in a single season (Matt Lawson, 2005). He recently became the school's career leader in triples.
"Danny has had a great season and has been really consistent for us all year," said UCSD head coach Eric Newman. "This past week was just another example of him performing at a high level for us."
UCSD's 12-3 win over Cal State L.A. in the second game clinched the Tritons a spot in the four-team CCAA Tournament, which will be held May 10-12 in La Jolla.
Currently holding an eight-game hit streak, Susdorf has reached base safely in nine consecutive games. His performance this past week allowed him to take over the team lead in batting average at .381.
Susdorf is the third Triton to earn weekly honors from both the NCBWA and CCAA this season. Shortstop Garrett Tuck was named the NCBWA West Region Player of the Week on Apr. 24 and the CCAA Player of the Week on Mar. 19 and Apr. 23. Ryan Goodbrand picked up NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Week and CCAA Pitcher of the Week accolades in late February.
UCSD wraps up its regular season this week at home with a pair of non-conference games against Grand Canyon. Friday's tilt is set for a 6 p.m. start at Triton Ballpark, while Saturday's senior day game is at noon.
