LA JOLLA, Calif. - Eight UC San Diego baseball players were named to 2012 All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams, while first-year head coach Eric Newman was tabbed the league's Coach of the Year. In addition, pitcher Ryan Goodbrand was named the Co-Newcomer of the Year. The announcement was made Wednesday by the CCAA.
UCSD garnered four All-CCAA First Team selections, one second team pick and three honorable mentions. Newman guided the Tritons to a share of the 2012 CCAA regular season title and will lead the team into this week's league tournament as the No. 1 seed.
"I am really proud of our guys and they are very deserving of these honors," said Newman. "We've played as a team all year and having eight guys named all-conference is a testament to that. I know that those who received individual honors feel this is a team accomplishment as well."
Center fielder Danny Susdorf, shortstop Garrett Tuck and pitchers Ryan Goodbrand and Tony York were named to the first team.
A junior from Newhall, Susdorf has put together a career season thus far. He leads the Tritons in batting average (.380), at-bats (184), runs scored (45), hits (70), doubles (15), triples (9), total bases (103), slugging (.560), on-base percentage (.452) and stolen bases (26). In the CCAA, he ranks first in triples, second in steals, third in average and hits and fourth in runs and total bases. This season, he broke UCSD's career and single season records for three-baggers. Susdorf was also an All-CCAA First Team pick in 2011.
In his second season as the Tritons' starting shortstop, Tuck ranks second on the team in batting average (.366), at-bats (183), hits (67), on-base percentage (.414) and stolen bases (13). The sophomore from Arcadia has a team-high seven sacrifice flies. Tuck is one of just two players on the roster to have started all 50 of the team's games.
Goodbrand, a junior from Rancho Santa Margarita, is in his first year with the Tritons after transferring from Irvine Valley College. The right-hander is currently 9-0 with a 3.28 ERA over 13 starts and a team-high 82.1 innings pitched. Goodbrand's nine victories rank second among all CCAA pitchers and his 58 strikeouts lead the Tritons' staff. Opponents are batting just .230 against him.
York has emerged as UCSD's primary closer this season. The senior from Escondido has amassed 10 saves, the second-most of any pitcher in the league. His save count ranks second in a single season at UCSD and fourth on the school's career list. He holds a team-low 2.25 ERA and a 2-1 record over 22 appearances.
Senior outfielder Gregg Ringold was selected to the All-CCAA Second Team for his performance this season. The Los Altos Hills native is third on the team with a .318 batting average. Ringold is second in stolen bases, tied with Tuck with 13 swipes. That total is also tied for sixth in the league. In his last game on May 5 against Grand Canyon, Ringold had three hits, two of those triples, while adding a run scored and a RBI.
Sophomore second baseman Spencer Frazier, sophomore outfielder Justin Rahn and junior first baseman Richard Seigel earned All-CCAA Honorable Mention recognition.
After starting the 2012 campaign with a 17-15 record, Newman and the Tritons completely turned things around and have posted a 12-6 mark since. He was named UCSD's head coach in August of 2011 after serving as the pitching coach at Nebraska since 2007. Prior to mentoring the Cornhuskers' staff, Newman was the head coach at Dallas Baptist.
"I am very honored to be named CCAA Coach of the Year by my peers," said Newman. "There are some very fine coaches in this league, so I don't take this for granted. This is not a one-man award. Without great assistants, administration and players, this does not happen, and I am very grateful to them."
Cal State L.A.'s senior third baseman Daniel Duran was named the 2012 CCAA Most Valuable Player. Senior right-hander Geoff Broussard of Cal Poly Pomona was unanimously voted the Pitcher of the Year. Along with Goodbrand, Cal State Dominguez Hills junior outfielder Matthew Young was named the Co-Newcomer of the Year, while San Francisco State catcher Mark Lindsay garnered Freshman of the Year accolades.
UCSD will host the CCAA Tournament May 10-12 at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla. In opening round action Thursday, No. 2 seed Chico State takes on No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m., while the top-seeded Tritons face off against No. 4 Sonoma State at 7 p.m. The tournament's winner earns an automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Championships.
