CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO REWIND
UCSD opened its CCAA season last Saturday at Cal State San Bernardino. Two Tritons recorded career-high point totals, but the Coyotes made 65.5 percent of their shots in the second half to take a 90-82 victory. The Tritons led by as many as 12 points in the first half before CSUSB turned it on in the second stanza. Justin Brue had a career-high 24 points on 12-for-16 shooting and, for the third straight game, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. James McCann finished with 21 points and seven assists - both totals just one short of his career-highs - and drained all nine of his free throw attempts. Brandon Blanchard set a new career-best with 14 points. UCSD hit 52.3 percent of its shots and had 11 turnovers and 19 assists.
As a team, UCSD is leading the CCAA in free throw percentage at 74.1 percent. The Tritons have made good on 60 of 81 attempts so far. Individually, Justin Brue is tied with two other players for the conference free throw percentage lead. He has been perfect, sinking all 10 of his shots from the charity stripe. James McCann leads all league players in assists, averaging 4.8 per game. McCann has led the team in helpers in all four games, which included a season high seven at Cal State San Bernardino last week.
ON THE VERGE OF 600
UCSD'S win against Fresno Pacific on Nov. 10 gave the program its 599th victory. Since the 1965-66 season, the Tritons have accumulated a 599-624 overall record, good for a .490 win percentage.
After playing three of its first four games of the season on the road, UCSD returns to RIMAC Arena for its next four contests - Cal State L.A. (Nov. 30), Cal State Dominguez Hills (Dec. 1), Pacifica (Dec. 16) and Cal State San Bernardino (Dec. 30). The Tritons' next away game won't be until the new year when they travel to Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 3. UCSD was 6-6 in La Jolla last season.
Prior to Cal State San Bernardino scoring 90 on Nov. 24, no UCSD opponent had posted a point total that high since Cal State Monterey Bay won 97-93 in double overtime on Jan. 26, 2008 at RIMAC Arena. The last time an opponent put up 90-plus in regulation was on Jan. 4, 2007 when Humboldt State downed the Tritons 90-76 in Arcata.
ALL BUT ONE
UCSD returns all but one of its starters from last season, including full-timers James McCann, Tyler McGrath and Justin Brue, along with part-timers MacKenzie McCullough and Ryan Peters . That group accounted for 61% of the team's scoring and 50% of its rebounds. The lone loss was big man Christian Hatch, who led the Tritons in scoring (12.5/game) and rebounding (7.3/game). The center was named to the All-CCAA Second Team.
A LOOK AT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Cal State L.A. enters Friday's game with a 1-2 overall record and an 0-1 mark in CCAA play. The Eagles opened with a 90-48 win over La Sierra, but have dropped their last two, falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills (55-62) and Cal Baptist (70-77) on the road. James Tillman is averaging a team-high 21.3 points per game while Jordan Richard is pulling down 8.3 rebounds per contest.
A LOOK AT THE TOROS
Cal State Dominguez Hills has already played seven games this season and entered the week with a 4-3 record. The Toros are one of three teams to have a CCAA victory under their belts as they defeated Cal State L.A., 62-55, on Nov. 15 at the Torodome. The team's last contest was a 69-78 loss at Grand Canyon. Givon Crump leads CSUDH in scoring at 12.2 points per game, while Lamine Diame is top in rebounding at 9.4 per game. The Toros play at Cal State San Bernardino Friday night.
