TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 2 UC San Diego softball team dropped a pair of games on the opening day of tournament play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic Friday afternoon.

UCSD lost its first game of the day, 11-4, against eighth-ranked Augustana and was then edged, 2-1, by Southeastern Oklahoma State in the final inning.

The Tritons now hold a 6-4 overall record on the season.

Game 1
Taylor Sepulveda posted a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored, while Emily McQuaid added another two hits and scored a run for the Tritons. Mya Romero finished with two RBI.

Augustana struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Lindsay Spanton and a single by Emily Heinz that drove in another pair.

UCSD plated its first run in the bottom half of the opening inning when a sacrifice fly by Romero scored Sepulveda.

The Vikings tacked on another five runs in the second as Brittany Coufal's solo home run got things going.

UCSD scored once in the fifth and pushed across two more in the bottom of the sixth.

Kayla Hensel (5-1) suffered her first loss of the season in the circle, giving up eight runs on eight hits over 1.2 innings.

Triton reliever Alexis Edwards gave up no runs and just two hits in 3.1 innings of work.

Augustana totaled 14 hits in the game while UCSD had seven.

Game 2
Five different Tritons had one hit apiece against Southeastern Oklahoma State, including Callie Grant, Caitlin Brown, Katie Saunders, Dyanna Imoto and McQuaid.

UCSD took a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh as Imoto's double to left field scored Amani Proctor.

However, the Tritons could not hold on as the Savage Storm came from behind in the bottom half of the final inning. Following back-to-back singles and a sacrifice, Southeastern laid down two successful squeeze bunts to close out the game in walk-off fashion.

Michelle Escamilla (1-3) pitched 6.1 innings for UCSD, giving up four hits while striking out one and walking two.

The Tritons continue bracket play Saturday, taking on Central Oklahoma at 10 a.m. followed by a match-up with Minnesota State-Mankato at 4 p.m. You can follow Saturday's games live via GameTracker.
