Release: Thursday 02/19/2013
by UCSD
POMONA, Calif. - UC San Diego right-hander Ryan Goodbrand on Tuesday added a second National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region Pitcher of the Week distinction for 2013, a day after being named the Rawlings/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week for the second time already through just the first three weeks of the new season.

Goodbrand has now claimed both NCBWA awards so far this year, with the initial selection accounting for the first two weeks combined, Feb. 1-10.

The senior from Rancho Santa Margarita threw 7.0 scoreless innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts in a 4-0 home win over Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night, Feb. 15, in the CCAA opener for both teams. Goodbrand heads into his next start this Thursday, Feb. 21, at Cal State Dominguez Hills (2 p.m.) with a shutout streak intact of 18.0 frames to begin the season. Opponents are batting just .129 off of him.

Goodbrand is one of four pitchers in the CCAA with three wins in 2013, and leads the league with 22 strikeouts. He is now a three-time conference and three-time regional Pitcher of the Week honoree for his career, boasting an unblemished 14-0 win-loss mark as a Triton over 18 outings, all starts. UCSD is 16-2 in those games.

In team news, UCSD dropped out of the first in-season installment of the NCBWA National Top 25, also announced on Tuesday, having appeared at No. 19 in the association's preseason rating. The Tritons had conversely moved up on Monday for a third straight week in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, from No. 21 to No. 18. They sit at No. 22 and No. 19 in the D2 Baseball News and College Baseball Lineup polls, respectively.

Regionally, the Tritons fell from No. 3 to No. 5 in Monday's latest NCBWA West Region Top 10, and held at No. 3 in the West ranking of D2 Baseball News.
