TURLOCK, Calif. - After four completed events on Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium, sophomore Veronica Bradley commenced the UC San Diego track and field team’s slate of competitions in the heptathlon at the 2013 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships on Thursday and ended the day in fourth place.
So far, Bradley has earned a total of 2,736 points in the meet. Bradley trails the leader, senior Jill Schmidt of Cal Poly Pomona, who has 3,014 points by 278. Senior Robin Hannah of Chico State, who is in second place, leads Bradley by 253 points (2,989), while third-place senior Brandi Gerardo of CPP is only seven points ahead (2,743).
Bradley concluded the opening day of the two-day heptathlon with the 200. Though she settled for fourth in her heat, Bradley finished fifth overall with a personal-record time of 26.70 to tack on 737 points.
The Richland, Wash., native started the day in the 100 hurdles, where she crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 15.48 to take second in her heat and fourth overall while accumulating 779 points in the process.
In the high jump, Bradley hit a season best, earned a share of third place and added 724 points to her total after clearing a height of 5’2.5”.
Bradley also claimed third place in the shot put with a throw measuring 31’1.75”. Bradley’s toss netted her 496 points.
The remaining Tritons will contend Friday and Saturday in the CCAA Championships. Friday’s action will kick off at 10 a.m. with the 110 hurdles of the decathlon and the women’s hammer throw. Bradley will complete the remaining three events of the heptathlon on Friday with the long jump, javelin and 800, which are set to begin at 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively.
