LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego’s Danny Susdorf was named late Wednesday to the 2013 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II All-West Region First Team, completing his trifecta of postseason regional recognition for the third year in a row.
The senior centerfielder had already been chosen the previous Thursday, May 16, to the Daktronics, Inc. All-West Region First Team and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-West Region Second Team.
That second-team designation by the NCBWA was all that stood in the way of the Newhall native becoming a three-time unanimous All-West Region first team performer, as Susdorf had made all three first teams as a sophomore and a junior.
Susdorf was one of four outfielders voted by West Region head coaches to the ABCA’s 16-player first team. He is the only one of 31 players recognized by Daktronics that is a three-time honoree. He made the NCBWA’s 15-player second team after back-to-back first-team placements. In 2012, Susdorf earned NCBWA All-America Third Team selection and Daktronics All-America honorable mention.
In addition to the three all-region accolades, Susdorf picked up a second straight Rawlings West Region Gold Glove from the ABCA over the weekend for his defense, highlighted by a remarkable streak of 240 consecutive chances handled without an error between April 29, 2011, and April 2, 2013.
The product of Hart High School who spent his freshman year at the University of San Diego prior to transferring to UCSD, completed an illustrious career in a Triton uniform on May 5. Susdorf left the program first in career triples (18), second in steals (78), tied for third in runs (175), fourth in batting average (.378) and hits (288), fifth in doubles (57) and tied for 10th in RBI (127). He compiled a career fielding percentage of .982 with just seven errors in 399 defensive chances. Susdorf started 190 of 214 games played.
Susdorf gained a third successive All-California Collegiate Athletic Association First Team appointment on May 8 after pacing the league in steals for the second year in a row with 29. He appeared in all 50 games, starting 49, and led the team in batting (.343), runs (48), hits (68), doubles (tied-16), triples (4) and on-base percentage (.420).
Sonoma State’s senior ace Glenn Wallace swept the Rawlings/ABCA, Daktronics and NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Year awards. Western Oregon senior shortstop Blake Miller was tabbed the West Region Player of the Year by Daktronics, while Cal Baptist junior outfielder Zach Esquerra picked up that distinction from the ABCA and NCBWA. Cal State Monterey Bay’s Walt White is the NCBWA West Region Coach of the Year.
Susdorf was joined on the West Region Gold Glove team by Michael Pomeroy (1B, Grand Canyon), Ronnie Fhurong (2B, CSUMB), Derek Mendoza (3B, Grand Canyon), Cody Slader (SS, Chico State), Victor Rasor-Thompson (OF, CSUMB), Scott Masik (OF, CSULA), Mitch Manning (C, Dixie State) and Andrew Naderer (P, Grand Canyon).
As an ABCA and Daktronics West Region first-teamer, Susdorf is eligible for their respective All-America teams, to be announced in the coming weeks. He can also earn a second national Rawlings/ABCA Gold Glove in as many years.
