Triton Men Earn Two Podium Finishes at NCAA West Regional

PASADENA, Calif. - The UC San Diego fencing team competed at the NCAA West Regionals, hosted by Caltech, Saturday in Pasadena. The Triton men had two student-athletes finish on the podium.

Travis Tibbitts placed third in men's sabre. UCSD also filled the fifth, sixth and seventh spots with Drew Dickinson, Bryson Abilay and Peter Meckling, respectively. Ryan Redhead of Air Force was the winner.

Men's epeeist Adam Campbell-Kruger also finished on the podium in third. Sean Callaghan was fourth, Luc Ginestet placed sixth and Paul Datta was eighth. Stanford's Jake Harbour was the top finisher.

In men's foil, Jeffrey Chan finished fourth, Keric Moore was just behind in fifth, Eduard Zilinskiy landed in eighth and Mitchell Shulman was ninth. Olympian Alexander Massialas of Stanford topped the field.

In women's foil, Nicole Chiang placed fourth, Alina Marshall was seventh and Rosalyn Lim was eighth. Madeleine Girardot of Air Force took the top spot.

Megan Gesner was UCSD's top finisher in women's sabre, placing fourth. Karinne Caisse was sixth and Munira Gesner took seventh. Alyssa Hofilena of Air Force won the event.

Stanford swept the podium in women's epee with Vivian Kong taking the victory. For UCSD, Laura Hawkins placed fifth, Natalie Chan was seventh and Moriah Kreeger was ninth.

Nationally, Stanford is ranked 10th on the men's side and receiving votes on the women's side. The UCSD men are receiving votes in the most recent CollegeFencing360.com poll.

UCSD will now wait to see who has qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championships, which will be hosted by Ohio State, March 20-23, in Columbus, Ohio. Last season, Campbell-Kruger and Ginestet represented the Tritons at nationals. For complete information on this year's NCAA Championships, click here.
