La Face, Cruz Earn NCBWA All-America Honorable Mention
Release: Thursday 05/22/2014

AUSTIN, Texas - UC San Diego baseball standouts Troy Cruz and Nick La Face have earned 2014 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II All-America honorable mention.

La Face, a fifth-year senior catcher and designated hitter, and Cruz, a sophomore infielder and right-handed pitcher, are first-time All-America honorees.

Honorable mention consists of student-athletes that appeared on more than one ballot, but did not make the first, second or third teams, each of which was made up of 14 players. La Face was one of four other designated hitters mentioned, with Cruz one of four utility performers.

La Face (North Hollywood/Notre Dame HS) saved his best for last with single-season bests in almost every offensive category in 2014. He hit .347 with 42 runs, 21 doubles, five triples, two home runs, 54 RBI and a single-season school-record 47 walks. La Face is first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in doubles, triples and walks, second in runs, RBI, on-base percentage (.486) and slugging (.539), and eighth in average.

Cruz, a San Diego product (Chula Vista/Bonita Vista HS), found a spot for himself on the diamond for all 54 games, with 37 at third base, 13 on the mound and four as the designated hitter. The two-way star batted .326 with a 2.90 ERA over a team-leading 87.0 innings on the hill with an 8-3 record and one seven-inning shutout among four complete games. Cruz led the Tritons with nine stolen bases, and added 33 runs, 11 doubles, three triples and 39 RBI.

Previously this postseason, Cruz and La Face were each named to the NCBWA All-West Region First Team, Daktronics All-West Region First Team and All-CCAA First Team. They became eligible for NCBWA All-America honors on the basis of their first-team all-region selections.

A total of 12 student-athletes from the West Region were recognized by the NCBWA.
