Troy Cruz Named to Daktronics All-America Third Team
Release: Thursday 05/23/2014
by UCSD

MARSHALL, Minn. - Troy Cruz, a sophomore for the UC San Diego baseball program, on Friday was named to the 2014 Daktronics, Inc., NCAA Division II All-America Third Team.

It is a first career All-America selection for the San Diego product out of Chula Vista and Bonita Vista High School. Cruz and senior teammate Nick La Face had each earned All-America honorable mention from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Thursday.

Excelling as both an infielder and a right-handed starting pitcher, Cruz was a veritable box-score stuffer for the 14th-ranked Tritons in 2014. He was the only member of the team to see his name on head coach Eric Newman’s lineup card to begin all 54 games, with 37 at third base, 13 on the mound and four as the designated hitter. The two-way star batted .326 with a 2.90 ERA over a team-best 87.0 innings on the hill. UCSD went 10-3 when he took the ball, with Cruz sporting an 8-3 personal win-loss record and one seven-inning shutout among four complete games. He led the Tritons with nine stolen bases, and added 33 runs, 11 doubles, three triples and 39 RBI.

Cruz was one of just three players from the West Region to be named a Daktronics All-American, with starting pitchers Nick Baker of Chico State and Trevor Oaks of California Baptist joining him on the third team. Four others garnered All-America honorable mention in Montana State Billings shortstop Brody Miller, Sonoma State ace George Asmus and Chico State pitchers Brad Lohse and closer Luke Barker.

A total of 48 student-athletes representing 32 institutions were chosen to either the first, second or third team, while 19 picked up honorable mention.

The teams are voted on by baseball media relations contacts at NCAA Division II member institutions. Daktronics has sponsored a baseball All-America program since 2007. Cruz is UCSD’s ninth Daktronics All-American since that time, with five second-teamers and now four third-team honorees. Most recently, Tim Shibuya and Blake Tagmyer both made the third team in 2011.
