UCSD Defeats Cal State L.A., 6-3

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 17 UC San Diego women's tennis team defeated No. 20 Cal State L.A. by a score of 6-3 Monday afternoon at Northview Courts on campus.

UCSD won four of six singles match-ups and two of three doubles tilts to take the win. UCSD improved to 6-4 overall, while CSULA suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 4-1.

Kyra Scott and Paula Chou defeated Leora Hemmerich and Sydney Postal, 8-2 at No. 2, while Tara Vanooteghem and Laura Wilke rolled past Samantha Sismundo and Tiffani Shaik by a score of 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Scott downed Hemmerich at No. 1 (6-3, 3-6, 6-4), Chou dispatched Sonia Landeros in the No. 2 spot (6-3, 6-3), Nava Nowamooz battled at No. 3 against Shaik to secure a win (5-7, 6-0, 7-6) and Kellie Taylor topped Victoria Vo at No. 6 (7-5, 7-6).

Taylor's win clinched the team victory for the Tritons.

The Golden Eagles won the No. 4 and No. 5 singles match-ups. Vannoteghem fell short to Sydney Postal at No. 4 (7-6, 6-4). In the fifth spot, Tiffany Leung eked out a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win against Shannon Theisen.

Next up, UCSD plays at Division I opponent Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 1:30 p.m
