GLENDALE, Ariz. - The No. 17 UC San Diego women's tennis team captured its first win of the season Friday, defeating Dominican University of California, 8-1, at the Paseo Racquet Center in Arizona.
The Tritons shut out the Penguins in singles play and surrendered one doubles match. UCSD improved its record to 1-3, while Dominican fell to 0-3 on the season.
Tritons Jacquelyn Davis and Tara Vanooteghem dominated the bottom of the singles ladder, both sweeping their opponents, Jessica Curlett and Jobeth Pascual, respectively. Neither Davis nor Vanooteghem allowed a single point.
Melissa Breisacher won her No. 1 singles match over Irina Morozova, 5-7, 6-2 and 10-5.
The only Triton loss of the day came at No. 1 double, as Breisacher and Davis fell narrowly to Morozova and Gaby Verspieren, 8-6. Morozova and Verspieren remain undefeated on the season at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman Melinda Chu, who is coming back from an ankle injury, celebrated her first win as a Triton, defeating Verspieren at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-4 and 10-3.
"The girls played very well today for our first win, but we'll expect a much tougher match tomorrow against Grand Canyon," head coach Liz LaPlante said.
The Tritons will take on Grand Canyon at 11:30 a.m. (PT) Saturday.
