PENSACOLA, Florida - The No. 21 UC San Diego women's tennis team returned to action Friday after a two-week break, beating Delta State University in dominant fashion, 8-1 on the first day of action at the West Florida Invitational.

The Tritons went two for three in doubles play and swept the singles ladder against the Lady Statesmen. With the win, UCSD improved its record to 6-8, while Delta State fell to 5-6.

"We played well with warm and windy conditions," UCSD head coach Liz LaPlante said. "The team looked good after coming off of finals week."

At No. 1 doubles, Melissa Breisacher and Jacquelyn Davis defeated Delta State's Erin Teivans and Lisa Jamais, 8-5. Katie Mulloy and Laura Wilke got the other doubles win at No. 3, beating opponents Sandra Tora and Elsa Wantzen by a wide 8-2 margin. The Lady Statesmen's lone win of the day came from the No. 2 doubles spot, where Maria Moya and Hidemi Mayoshiro took down Tara Vanooteghem and Melinda Chu, 8-6.

The Tritons swept Delta State in singles matchups, where all wins but one came in straight sets. At No. 1, Breisacher beat Maria Moya, 6-2, 6-0. Breisacher is currently ranked No. 16 in the West Region. Chu, Vanooteghem, Mulloy and Samantha Yeung all defeated their opponents handily in positions 2-5, respectively. At No. 6, Delta State's Sandra Tora fought Krystal Mizuguchi for three sets, eventually falling to the Triton, 7-6, 2-6, 3-10.

"We expect a tough match tomorrow against West Florida," said LaPlante.

The Tritons will face West Florida in day two of the tournament on Saturday at 12 p.m. PST.
